With the orb that grants us the power to levitate up and safely float down pits, it's only a matter of time before Drake and his companions reach the gate of the ancients. that leads to the final destination on their journey. It still pays to be observant while exploring the gate of the ancients and the pits however, for there are goodies to be found in the form of potions, equipment and some really powerful endgame items that will serve you well in the next area, the final area of the game. That area is the Shadow Realm, specifically the Palace of Shadows.

Once you arrive in the palace, returning back to the rest of the game world isn't as simple as walking through the door you enter through, for that door no longer exists. There is a way out but you have to fight through a lot of enemies to get there, so you'd better be as prepared as you can be for the foes that lie ahead. If you're really prepared however you won't have much to worry about; you'll have all the orbs you could get so far including the one to heal your party to full and replenish your runescepters plus a lot of healing resources, not to mention the teleportation runes that I haven't used up until this point. That pair of runes, if used before you enter the shadow realm, allow you to slowly and safely explore the palace, teleporting out to heal and recharge your runescepters each time you need to. If you were like me when I first played however and didn't use those runes and worse yet, didn't have Sparkle and the rune from the faerie realm, the palace of shadows is a daunting prospect.

The foes within the palace are numerous and difficult. All of them
are deadly in close quarters and some are competent at ranged combat too. Worse yet, if you're not quick to react to their deaths you'll have to fight them again, draining even more of your resources each time you do. The lessons you've learned from the earlier potions of the game are tested here and only those who heed them will not struggle through the final area, for the palace of shadows is larger then any other area in the game, spanning multiple floors. Take it slow and remember that enemies have patrol limits and can't deal well with doors, take advantage of those things whenever you can. You've made it this far being careful and cautious, don't throw all that away by being reckless on the final stretch.
