Look Outside - How To Get Killed By Shadow And Unlock The Behind The Mask Achievement!
12In order to get killed by Shadow and unlock the Behind The Mask achievement, you must make certain choices during your encounters with Shadow. Shadow is an NPC that will randomly start showing up as you explore.
I believe it takes 2 days in-game before it starts showing up, so in this time, make sure to get a few items as well as a piece of food with "very filling" in the description. It would suck to encounter Shadow and not have anything to give it! I had to start a new game so many times to get this right, so just make sure to prepare the first few days.
I HIGHLY suggest forming a party the first 2 days (random NPCs knocking at the door, like Sophie, Hellen, etc.) as well as killing the Grinning Beast on the second floor to recruit Leigh. The reason why I suggest this is if you can kill the Rat King, you get the Rusty Crown, and if you wear it, you can talk to the rats around the first floor. There is one near the stairwell that will give you a Burrito if you talk to it, and this food is "very filling." Just make sure to leave rats alone until you get the Crown!
Now that you have items to choose from to give it, and a piece of food that is "very filling", walk around until your first encounter with Shadow. Choose "Hello...?" when given the choice, then choose "You seem ok..." Next, choose "Do you need help?" and then "Are you hungry?" Offer it some food, and make sure to give it the food that is "very filling". After Shadow leaves, continue your day as normal until it is late enough to sleep and then do so.
On the next day, walk around until you encounter Shadow again. I found a quick way of getting Shadow to appear is to just transition between screens on the stairwell. Anyways, once Shadow shows up again, talk to it. Say "Hi again, friend: when you have the choice. You will now get more options to choose from, but I don't think these ones matter since they do not progress the conversation, and Shadow also doesn't respond to them positively. If anything, just choose "Are you lost?" like I did and then "Goodbye" to end the conversation. Wait until night, and then sleep.
On the next day, again find Shadow and talk to it. Shadow will offer you a gift, so choose "Take it." After it gives you the tongue, choose the (Give it a gift) option, and choose something. I don't really know what all it likes, but after giving it the Army Figure from the Tooth family's apartment, it mentioned it seemed happy. Plus, this item shouldn't be needed anymore. Shadow leaves, so go to sleep.
At the start of the next day, leave your apartment. Shadow will be right at your door. Talk to it, and now it will simply leave you a gift. You MUST get the Rose item. If not, you will have to start this whole process over! I had to start a new game so many times because Shadow would just drop cash or an item.... Once he drops the Rose, pick it up, and play out the rest of your day as normal. Once it is night, head to your apartment. SAVE YOUR GAME NOW! There is another achievement also associated with Shadow, and you can reload this save after getting this one to also get the other on. Also, getting this achievement results in a game over! Once you have saved your game, go to bed.
Right when you wake up, Shadow will be in your room. IF you have Xaria and Monty, they force you to sleep on the couch, so go into your room. Either way, talk to Shadow. When given the choice, choose ANY of the "Walk inside" options. Just don't choose the blank space. You will get killed by Shadow, and the achievement will unlock!
