Into The Dead is a Zombie Survival game that came out in Early Access last month on April 9th, 2025. It was developed by PikPok, and Published by Boltray Games and PikPok. It can be found on Steam at: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2239710/Into_the_Dead_Our_Darkest_Days/
I am in-between games right now (after having finished the AMAZING Look Outside), so I figured I would give it a shot. I DO love me some zombie games, and this one caught my eye while looking for a new game to delve into. As it is in Early Access still, and has no obtainable achievements as of now, I grabbed the Demo to see if I liked it, and to see if I would buy it in the future when there is more content, updates and achievements. The premise is all too familiar: Zombie outbreak happens. You must scavenge to survive and make it out of the city to get to a "safe" area.
You start by choosing a duo in the beginning. Each person has their strength and weaknesses, which will have a big impact on how you go about playing the game. Some may be able to use melee or ranged weapons better than others, while some survivors may not be able to make barricades as easy, or even not use certain items.
The days are split into day and night, and you task your duo with crafting, barricading the safe house, going to explore, cooking and other things. You have to maintain your characters' mental health, hunger and sleep, which gets affected by the tasks you have them do. Letting these stats slip too far down causes you to get negative traits, which affect how your characters function.
As you explore locations, you find food, supplies and weapons to bring back to the base. Characters can only hold so many items, so you have to manage what you need versus what you want to bring back. You can find telescopes, which will unlock new locations to visit. Each location has a "danger level", which affects how many zombies are in them. I don't know if the danger goes up as time passes or not, but it gets hectic with even just a handful of zombies!
Weapon-wise, there is the obvious range and melee type of weapons. Melee weapons have durability, strength, and other stats. You can stealth kill zombies by sneaking behind them and attacking them, which helps a lot because direct combat can leave you hurting pretty bad, even against just one enemy. Weapons also make noise, which can attract nearby enemies, causing them to come after you. I didn't get into gunplay during this session, but I can already tell that gunfire will definitely alert surrounding enemies, and should ONLY be used as a last ditch effort. Maybe there are silencers though?
As for locations, certain locations can be repurposed into new safe houses by killing all of the zombies in them and then moving your characters to it. Locations have different perks, like more places to sleep, the capability to have workbenches, and more. You can only travel so far from where your current base is, so to get to some places you found by using a telescope, you are going to have to move closer to it if it is out of range. Since the objective is to get out of the city, you are going to have to do this anyways.
All in all, I had fun with the game! There ARE a few things that I kind of don't agree with (like only one character being able to craft at a crafting bench at a time), but nothing felt so bad to the point where I wouldn't try the full game when it comes out of EA. I am not sure what all EA has to offer as I only played the Demo, but I am sure there is a bunch of stuff I didn't get to witness. If this sounds like your kind of game, I would say give it a shot!
