Undoubtedly the best master level. Like of course it is. You cannot try to argue that it isn't. It is flawed, but it owns the flaws. This map always feels huge an adventure. It feels mysterious, both because of the atmosphere and the complexity of steps it takes to fully explore it. In like 2016, after not playing doom for years and coming back to it, having completely forgotten the master levels I chose to start them up first. I played them alphabetically, so I started with attack, breezed through it, and then was hit with this monster. It absolutely sucked the life out of me then, I thought it would never end. Even with saves it took me probably 2 hours. It left the impression of a legendary map in my head forever. Beating it single segment is something I would've never thought I would be able to do back then, and especially not in under 20 minutes. This map was honestly not very hard, but I practiced it quite a lot, finally learning the linkage between what every switch does. Once I completely knew the map, it became so much easier. Blind playthroughs, it is another story. I wish I could relive my first playing of it. Every floor of the tower contains a new, unique mechanic or gimmick. All are at least somewhat creative and make for a great fight (by master level standards). The broken enemies are annoying but I can look past it. I am also sure I could cut that time down by a few minutes, but I don't want to play it again. I think if I beat any map that takes longer than 15 minutes or so to finish, Ill just post the first successful recording. "Erecting the Black Tower" really makes the map for me. The gloomy atmospheric track perfectly conveys the feeling this map gives me, and it is absolutely the best track and the best pairing between map and midi from the new midi pack.
