The three soldiers killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan yesterday were on a routine patrol in a Mastiff armored vehicle.
The vehicle is considered the safest in theatre, and has saved countless British lives since it was first introduced in 2007.
It can carry eight troops plus two crewmen, and its heavy weight, blast-resistant seats and V shaped hull make it highly effective against roadside bombs.
Finding out exactly how the insurgents in Helmand have defeated Mastiff will be a matter of urgency for the MoD and investigators on the ground.
Whether it was a lucky strike or carefully orchestrated, they will want to rapidly counter this new threat.
