MiSTer FPGA - Exile (エグザイル〜時の狭間へ〜) / TurboGrafx CD (PC Engine CD)

Decided to check out some Working Designs ports after watching the recent Game Sack episode on the subject, and Exile was my first stop for TurboGrafx-16. I found myself enjoying this one quite a bit, and it's very tame for a Working Designs port. The difficulty-level increase only adds around 12 minutes extra to the game if you farm experience efficiently. Not bad at all. I actually feel it's a better balanced game than the original, which is overly easy and doesn't even require most of the gear or tonics you can purchase.
After playing through the USA and Japanese versions of this, I decided to try a speedrun for both of them and got the following results:
JP original - 50 mins 26 seconds (video: • Exile: Toki no Hasama e [Speedrun WR ... )
USA Working Designs port - 1hr, 2 mins, 24 seconds (video: • Exile (USA Working Designs) [Speedrun... )
This is the first game I've ever submitted speedruns for, and they're both pending approval currently. The current world record for the JP version is 1hr8mins, and the USA port had no runs submitted. There is a ton of minutiae in this game that you can optimize for, but I'm probably not going to return to it anytime soon if someone else takes the records for either version. Too many other games to go through on the TGFX/PCE library that I'm validating the performance of on MiSTer, currently.
Working Designs also cleaned up the presentation of the game a bit in their port. As you can see in the JP speedrun video, there are some glitchy lines throughout the game when talking to people and also when screen fade-outs occur. This is from the mid-frame palette switch being used in the game, which shows as kind of glitchy here, but is the same "effect" Konami used for the water in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood to give it the shimmering look on some stages. Konami actually turned this visually noisy side effect of a particular programming method into a visual benefit to their game. Golden-age Konami continues to impress, as does Working Designs with their efforts in cleaning Exile up for the USA release here.
MiSTer's PC Engine core was transformed into the most accurate way to play this console besides original hardware, largely in part thanks to efforts by srg320. He also created our SNES, Sega CD and Sega 32x cores, and is currently working on a Sega Saturn core for MiSTer.
