MiSTer FPGA - Elemental Master (エレメンタル マスター) / Genesis (Mega Drive)
1cc on "Difficult" setting. Finally getting around to playing this often-recommended shooter for Genesis after watching Shmup Junkie's recent overview of all shooters on the system. Check out his video here: https://youtu.be/RLB4W-8pZos . Press A+Start at the title for the options menu. With how easy this game is on default difficulty, it's kind of confusing that they would hide this menu. It only makes sense to me when considering the early push for an "arcade at home" experience for the Mega Drive, so I think of holding A as a dip switch of sorts in this context. PC Engine also commonly has this type of menu/options system, and I owned neither console growing up so the structuring is new to me.
This was an early release for the Mega Drive in Japan, but came out 3 years later in North America. I think if this would have been included soon after the launch of the Genesis, it would have been an excellent early showpiece for the capabilities of the system. Even with the late release, it still is. The music in particular is a standout here, featuring some great early use of the YM2612 on the system. (option menu also includes BGM function to jam out to these tracks!)
I'll return to this in the future to try and get a 1 credit clear for the "Expert" setting. It's a short but sweet experience, and I feel the difficulty is only really challenging on the "Expert" level. I don't have time to grind out the highest difficulty in games currently, so I'm instead focusing on filter showcases for now.
