MiSTer FPGA - Out Zone (アウトゾーン) / Toaplan V1 Arcade [BETA]
I'm many months over-due on checking out the Toaplan beta core by Darren O, and decided to kick it off with a game I've never tried before- Out Zone! Today is my first day trying the game, with this being my 4th playthrough. Easy difficulty and 5 lives are set in dips. The game is still quite challenging even on the easy difficulty, so I definitely recommend that new players turn that down before starting! You get increased difficulty with each loop of the game after clearing it also, with increased enemy numbers, bullets becoming faster and enemies firing quicker when they appear on screen. 10hz turbo fire is used also.
An octo-gate arcade stick was perfect for control in this game. Just felt so smooth throughout. I had to play on HDMI while recording unfortunately, because the core gives an upside down image on HDMI when playing on a CRT rotated 90 degrees to the right. This is because I had to use the dip switch to flip the screen, and the rotation option in the OSD for HDMI does not account for this. Hopefully in the future this can be improved, since in a game with so much going on as this one every millisecond counts!
This was also a great chance to check out the new adaptive scanlines in a vertical game. You may notice that things are a bit sharper than normal here. I played this on a rotated Sony KV-24FV310 before recording, and it really is shocking how sharp vertical games look on a good CRT. With these settings I tried to capture a bit of that and think it turned out pretty good for the most part. You may notice the scanline depth is a bit darker here, and that's the result of how prominent the vertical scanlines look on my CRT while playing also. Even in lighter/white areas I notice them far more when playing on a rotated CRT. This is the first time I've used a rotated shadow mask in a video, and all of this while maintaining fullscreen scaling thanks to wickerwaka's recent 256 phase improvements to the filter system on MiSTer now.
