MiSTer FPGA - Doom 32X Resurrection [v2.1 Sega Mouse 16x9 Widescreen] / Genesis 32X (Mega Drive)
Doom 32X Resurrection romhack: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6269/ (v2.1 used here)
Hi-Res 16x9 Anamorphic Widescreen. Sega Mouse. Ultra-Violence difficulty with 1 life played.
Occasional visual glitches are from MiSTer's in-progress Sega 32X core, NOT the romhack.
Gamepad buttons were bound to a keypad also (ErgoDox) for a very familiar PC-style setup.
Compared to the original release on 32X, this seems like an upgrade in every way. The D32XR Team have done an awesome job with this hack! There have been many improvements since my last video of the 1.5 version of this hack, so be sure to check the patch notes!
The new 320x224 fullscreen resolution is a great addition and generally makes for a more cohesive image than the default low-res mode, with improvements like removing the vertical stripe dithering that's used in the low-res modes. The downside here is that the framerate is much lower than the low-res modes (but not worse than the original 32X retail release it seems.) The lighting model seems greatly improved since I last tried the 1.5 version of the hack- much closer to the PC original now, and the high color mode looks excellent as well. Quite an achievement by the D32XR team! You can offset the framerate drop at higher resolutions by lowering the detail setting, though I kept detail at max in this run to fully show these improvements.
For control options, this hack has exactly what you'll need for fluid gameplay with either a mouse or gamepad! I took advantage of the Sega Mouse support in the hack this time, and it just feels perfect. This is the only 32X game/hack I know of that supports the Sega Mouse peripheral!
In my previous video I used a Saturn controller which was also a great fit, being the ultimate evolution of the Sega 6-button design along with L/R bumper buttons which are incredibly handy for strafing control in Doom. There's an option in the controls screen to set this up properly.
Next gotta talk about the music! What a treat, especially compared to those drab and muffled conversions that were done for the original version. Great work here by Spoony Bard! I used the "Minimal" YM2612 filter in the MiSTer core options so you can more-clearly hear the improved audio.
