MiSTer FPGA - Nexzr (ネクスザール) [No Miss - Normal] / PC Engine CD (TurboGrafx CD)

Nexzr has been recommended to me several times over the years, so I decided to fire it up for the first time yesterday and it does not disappoint. This is an excellent shooter- one of the best I've played on the system.
There is a message in the design to every stage in this game, teaching you how to play the game better as you try and try again. At first I found it to be difficult, taking a couple dozen lives just to get through the first three stages, and then when returning for my second playthrough I found it to be quite easy when I got my first 1cc. This was because I was ranking down and lowering the difficulty with each death, which makes for some interesting changes in this one. For instance, I didn't see a majority of the final bosses' attacks on my first playthrough, but when getting there on one credit he had much more variation. Playing through for a no-miss after that, I finally saw the true challenge in the base difficulty. The power-up that gives you two additional ships flying around and helping you is by far the most useful, but it isn't always the best option in some sections.
I plan on returning to this one for the harder difficulties, and also the alternate version "Summer Carnival '93: Nexzr Special", which has a custom caravan mode! I was honestly a bit sad when completing this run, as I know it will be a while before I'm able to return and play further. There were some very close calls on this run, and my pulse was racing after completing the 4th stage because I knew the no-miss was clearly within reach at that point. With the trifecta of great audio, visuals and gameplay in this one, it will be a joy to revisit for years to come. Give it a try if you haven't yet!
MiSTer's PC Engine core was transformed into the most accurate way to play this console besides original hardware, largely in part thanks to efforts by srg320. He also created our SNES, Sega CD and Sega 32x cores, and is currently working on a Sega Saturn core for MiSTer.
