MiSTer FPGA - Salamander [Normal 1cc] / PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16)
Edit - Scored a 1cc on Expert difficulty with a much better run than this one, two days later.

Another Konami shooter 1cc, and my first that was done live on stream! It was a short one since I got this on the 2nd try during that stream, with that being my third session with the game since trying it this week. I thought memorizing the final stage would take more time, but it's not so bad after a couple tries really. That being said, some parts of this game can be really frustrating when first learning them! In particular the enemies who spawn around you on the asteroid stage, the walls on the volcano stage, and general recovery tactics when ranked-up on the final stage. Overall the bosses are pretty tame on the first loop, with the stages themselves being the main challenge here.
Like my previous Gradius Gaiden video, I got the urge to play this one from ShmupJunkie's recent Konami Shooters overview video- check it out here: • Every Konami Shoot Em Up REVIEWED!
Now that I've played the PC Engine port, the next stop is the Japan-only "Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus" on PS1 which has the arcade original, JP version of Life force and Salamander 2 which I still haven't played. The goal is to work towards the hardest games in the series for 1cc clears- Gradius 2 on PC Engine/X68000 and Gradius 3 SA-1 on SNES & the arcade original. Slowly but surely. Folks that have watched my streams since the beginning got to see the progress I was making on Gradius 2 early on, but the crab enemy at the end and crawlers shooting from every direction on the walls when ranked-up, always seemed to stop my best runs. Those were painful sessions, knowing how close I was to the end. The announcer says "You need some practice!" when dying in Gradius games, and I took it to heart and decided to tackle multiple entries in the series before returning for another attempt at 2.
MiSTer's PC Engine core was transformed into the most accurate way to play this console besides original hardware, largely in part thanks to efforts by srg320. He also created our SNES, Sega CD and Sega 32x cores, and is currently working on a Sega Saturn core for MiSTer.
