Well, that took way less time than I was expecting. When I closed out the last session of this one, the game said I was just past the midway point. In the end, it barely took more than an hour to get to the ending. Like, I literally finished so early, that had enough time to replay the last segment in Classic Mode... and I *still* finished earlier than usual, even after messing around with the bonus features. Makes me wonder how the game itself calculates in-game percentages.

I did have to resort to a guide to figure out some of the more complex puzzles though. Granted, I got most of the way myself. But who knew you had to walk along the path of the destroyed toy rabbits to get to the Vultures' lair? And don't even get me started on the demolition derby segment -- I'm just glad they left in the arrow key controls. The mouse controls on that section are literally indescribable.

After comparing a few segments head-to-head, I've got mixed opinions on the remastered graphics compared to the originals. The animation in the classic style looks smoother and it seems like a lot of the designs were built with technical limitations in mind, so they look a bit weird when they got upscaled for modern resolutions. Still, having widescreen is a nice addition and aside from the cheap filter look in some areas, it's not like the remastered look is terrible. I do miss the obvious pre-rendered 3D assets though, even if that's just personal preference.
Audio has a clear advantage though... and I didn't bother with testing the classic controls. I'm trying to wrap my head around what they could've changed. Disabling controller support doesn't exactly make sense, given how this game was on consoles, but maybe it just means you have to be more exact with some of your clicks. That just sounds annoying to me, but I guess it's cool that you've technically got both versions in full at hand -- well, aside from the title screen -- even if you'd have to play the classic version with those black bars on the side. Weird that they didn't just resize the resolution in-game.

Come to think of it, since I played this on GOG, I wonder if that means you actually get the original version from '95 on there as well. That's something they'll typically do.

...Upon checking out both my install and the store page itself, it looks like they don't. I guess including the classic aesthetic (more or less) in the new version was enough. Kind of a shame for those digital completionists out there, but it's not like it's hard to find a copy of the original release online to fire up in SCUMMVM if you're desperate to play the game exactly as it was back in the mid '90s. As for the rest of us, I'd say this is the definitive way to play.

...still shocked that this was picked over Grim Fandango, though. Oh well, maybe next year.
