Well, I guess I had a lot less left to do than I thought. Granted, I don't exactly feel great about getting the worst ending in this game, but fortunately, in proper Metroidvania fashion, that just opens me up to getting the rest later on. Play Extend's going to have plenty of material moving forward... I just need to find the time to clear out the current backlog on there before I return to Blasphemous and Hollow Knight.
On the plus side, I did manage to get that badge I was looking for, so I bought that last slot from the badge store and set up my ideal load-out. I even managed to find two more mask pieces -- in addition to buying one from the shop -- so I was at seven hit points when I wrapped things up. Pretty useful, considering how many enemies were dealing 2 HP worth of damage per attack by that point.
According to KI, it sounds like I was supposed to have fought the Dung Defender way earlier in this playthrough. Fortunately, that just meant that taking him out was a breeze. I also managed to get the second Hornet fight -- which was substantially harder. Good thing I managed to find the bench right near her before my second attempt. Having to backtrack that entire distance after my first defeat was kind of a pain in the ass. As for the titular Hollow Knight itself, it was a relatively easy fight. Sure, I took plenty of damage... but it also gave me enough space to constantly heal.
That being said, I don't exactly feel great for wrapping things up with the most simple ending. It almost feels like an insult considering how much I actually ended up enjoying the game, despite my first real exposure to it being akin to watching a child eat an entire phone book. Still, it's not like I'm really saying "good-bye" to the game. More like, "see ya later". Hopefully, I'll find the time to go back to it via Play Extend!! some time next year -- though, honestly, 2025 seems a bit more likely considering everything I've got on my plate in 2024.
That just leaves three more short games left on my bonus list for the year. Here's hoping I can wrap things up before Christmas!
