MultiVersus Alpha - 1v1 Me Bro
MultiVersus is a team game, but there are other modes tucked away in there! Just uh...maybe there's a REASON they're kind of hidden away....
Set 1: Scooby's Haunted Mansion, Classic 3 Platforms
Shaggy (me) vs. Finn (Lil_diabetes49)
So right off the bat...this is kind of a bad matchup I think. Finn's range outpaces Shaggy so it's hard to contest him a lot of the time. But a greater problem here is that so many moves seem designed with the chaos of a 2v2 in mind. While the game has fast movement, many attacks are actually rather slow. I've seen some people find some combos for some characters but it doesn't seem evenly distributed as of now, and on top of that there's rather low kill power for most moves, so 1v1 sets can kinda drag out. With everyone having so much air manuverability you have to really work to chase people down. Without a partner to help you out it just becomes a crapshoot if you'll actually hit your opponent or not. That and I was kinda spamming Shaggy's sandwich in hopes of getting that daily mission done which is ALSO bad cuz the sandwich kinda sucks in a 1v1 situation. Bad decisions all around!
Set 2: Classic 3 Platforms, Scooby's Haunted Mansion
Jake (me) vs. Bugs Bunny (IceMachineNo1)
Now just because some characters don't seem suited for 1v1 that doesn't mean SOME can transition just fine. Jake has range, a lot of his moves are deceptively quick, and there's at least SOME synergy I can see with how they work for combos. Bugs meanwhile...kinda has the deck stacked against him. With so many of his moves suffering cooldowns it really whittles down his approach options. That said, maybe this is just a bad match up...
Set 3: Classic 3 Platforms, Training Room
Reindog (me) vs. Bugs Bunny (brandonv)
OK, so what happens when Bugs gets a favorable matchup?! That said, maybe I'm just bad with Reindog. People are talking like Reindog is among the best characters in the game, to the point devs are going to be nerfing him, but I don't see it. Like, he can do a lot of damage over time I guess? I'm also not sure if they mean he's good in a 1v1 or team scenario. In my experience in a 1v1 fight, Reindog's moves are too slow or completely useless. His energy tether for example is almost totally unviable in 1v1, as it's designed to pull your teammate to safety. It does a little damage and might charm opponents if they get hit with the tip of it but it's not much. And his Up Special in the air has him curl up in a ball, with the express purpose of being picked up and thrown by his ally...it otherwise does no damage or helps in recovery so it is ACTUALLY useless in 1v1. His annoying zoning takes an obnoxiously long time to charge up to be effective too.
In this set, Bugs demonstrates that he just has faster attacks and some....questionable hitboxes that outright beat Reindog's efforts. These stages are also so big that it takes so long to kill and if you aren't already off-stage or near it, even strong hits at high percentages likely won't kill. These matches were a slog to get through honestly...not helped by my opponent being a bit of an ass near the end. Of course it's perfectly in character for Bugs to trash talk.
So....yeah, this is just a small sample of 1v1s of course. I'm sure different stages and different matchups might be more interesting but for me at least right now...this ain't it. Speaking as someone who can appreciate good 1v1 platform fighters and someone who doesn't usually like to play teams in them...teams in MultiVersus are DEFINITELY the way to go and anyone trying to argue otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about. But don't go away yet...I still have plenty in store!
