MultiVersus Alpha - Friendly Free-For-Alls!
0Did you know MultiVersus has a free-for-all mode? Well now you do! And I got some friends to join in to help me! Give it up for @YuuGiJoou over on YouTube and Maidens....who HAS a YouTube but never posts, so no plug for him!
Match 1: Trophy's E.D.G.E. 2
Jake (YuuGiJoou) vs. Shaggy (Maidens) vs. Shaggy (Bot) vs. Harley Quinn (me)
So, free-for-alls in MultiVersus are....interesting. For one thing...items exist! They aren't just confined to a few character movesets! Items can and will randomly spawn in, which you can pick up and throw at enemies. Honestly...kinda looks like Bugs' moveset was the basis for a lot of these. Dynamite, safes, uh...assist trophies? (Though just for Adventure Time characters as of now), blocks of ice...a rock...maybe a few more but as of now they feel pretty understated?
The more interesting thing to ME is that as time ticks down the stage boundaries close in, making it easier to die. Like a battle royale or something! But also sometimes kills give you more points? I'm still confused on that. Like, either that kicks in as a comeback mechanic or there's items that give you more points or you get a bonus for surviving a bunch or...I'm not sure. So sudden upsets can and WILL happen. We're mostly just getting used to the chaos here though.
Match 2: Classic 3 Platforms
Garnet (YuuGiJoou) vs. Velma (Maidens) vs. Harley Quinn (Bot) vs. Finn (me)
So yeah like here...at random I just got a "ring out points doubled" notice at about 5:33 in this match. I ALSO got one point when the BOT KO'd Velma so...I guess you can get assists or something? Very confusing. I mean, I'll take the win though!

Batman (YuuGiJoou) vs. Taz (Maidens) vs. Taz (Bot) vs. Steven Universe (me)
Juuuuuust gonna point out I'm the only one on PS4 here and Maidens deliberately picked a character that can appear invisible to people on that platform. And yeah....he knew. And yet ironically enough it was the BOT that was invisible first. Such a strange glitch.
Match 4: Classic 3 Platforms
Reindog (YuuGiJoou) vs. Bugs Bunny (Maidens) vs. Jake (Bot) vs. Velma (me)
How's THIS for a sudden last-second turn-around? Also neat to see that bots can pick locked costumes too, since Cake is a level 50 battle pass reward in the alpha and...none of us where anywhere close to getting it. Also I apologize but there's an Easter Egg with Velma I forgot to show off. She has a unique crawling animation where she's looking for her glasses and the screen actually gets super blurry as a result...only for you though. I'll try to remember once the open beta starts!
Match 5: Batcave
Tom & Jerry (YuuGiJoou) vs. Finn (Maidens) vs. Garnet (Bot) vs. Superman (me)
Heh, I guess Garnet AND Superman do have a lot in common... Just throwing out here I think any character with super armor is just gonna clean house in free-for-alls. Just ask Kazuya!
Match 6: Tree Fort
Bugs Bunny (YuuGiJoou) vs. Jake (Maidens) vs. Jake (Bot) vs. Arya Stark (me)
Man it's raining cats and dogs in here...heh heh heh... So yeah uh...a fine enough match to end on I guess....computers get to win too, sometimes!
Much like 1v1, it's clear this mode is undercooked compared to everything else, but I found it more fun. Teams is likely where I'd spend more time with this game than anything, but I'd be down for some chaotic free-for-alls every so often. Also worth noting that this being both cross-play AND with a friend of ours overseas....connection was actually pretty smooth! WAY better than a lot of the Smash sessions we have by comparison so...this game certainly has that going for it.
Next time I'll try teaming up with a friend and seeing where that gets us. Stay tuned!
