Nancy Drew: Mystery of the Seven Keys Playthrough - A Former Mod Follows a Cat around Prague
Greetings one and all to a playthrough of HeR Interactive's 2024 release, Mystery of the Seven Keys. This is the 34th installment of their Nancy Drew Adventure series. As with its predecessor, this game utilizes a different engine and various new teams. These differences are, to me, strongly felt throughout the game.
This game is set in Prague, Czechia, with Nancy diving into a case of stolen gems. Along the way, she learns about the city's history: kings, coronation pieces, alchemy, and marionettes. She also learns a bit about cyber security. I appreciated all we could learn about Prague, but admittedly found the story a bit overwhelming with all the various bits and pieces interwoven into the storyline.
There are some fun puzzles and catchy tracks. Those, along with the base storyline, are about all I enjoy from the game, sadly. The quality of animation is horribly varied throughout the game: some aspects are incredibly beautiful and well-done, while many, MANY others are flat and pixilated. It's a travesty. Additionally, the Classic Mode of navigation (the traditional point-and-click, rather than free-roaming with a keyboard) is terribly put together. It's quite shameful at times.
And to top it all off, the dialogue is pretty bad: it goes on and on, with very little player interaction (we have very few true choices--again).
Though I was excited for what initially seemed a promising game, I was left rather disappointed. There is much room for improvement with Mystery of the Seven Keys. If the storyline had been simpler (no need for the cyber end of things), was far less graphics-heavy, and the navigation had been designed far better than it was, then the game would have likely been a hit for me!
With that, I leave it to you to watch and decide how you feel about this latest mystery. Enjoy!
