Bravely Second Session 7: Take Yewr Time
I know, the title's the biggest stretch yet, but how else can I put it when we're going to hot springs instead of saving Agnès?
We open things up with our arrival at Yunohana, the land of hot springs, and that means we get to have the requisite Hot Springs Episode. You probably know how it goes: the boys and the girls split up, there's a warning about not peeking, there's some talk about physique, there's some shenanigans about peeking anyway... I'll give them some credit, though: they at least inverted it so it's the guys talking about their bodies. They lose points for Yew wanting to peek, but only a few, because Danzaburo's killer instinct stops him.
After, though, Yew steps out to cool off, and Yoko comes up to him. She says she's looking for something called the Sword of the Brave for her brother's sake. See, Danzaburo is not the biological son of the king of Yunohana, and their father won't accept him as his heir. The king told him to find the Sword of the Brave if he wants to be recognized, and Yoko, the sweet and loving younger sister, wants to find it for him. Yew feigns ignorance, but she susses out that it's in the Geyser Grotto. The next day, she's gone. Danzaburo goes after her, and the gang does, too.
Except there's a sidequest. After bumping into and lightly injuring a courier, the gang agrees to do his current job for him. The delivery: some food for an expedition led by one Ominas Crowe, including a bodyguard by the name of Artemia. Grapp Keep is close by, so hey, why not?
Alright, so the short version is, Ominas wants to feed his familiar, Bahamut, most of the food so he can learn the ultimate monster magic. Artemia wants to share the food equally, because they all deserve to live. A cave-in traps the expedition and the gang inside, and after a few days, things come to a head. I sided with Artemia, beat up Ominas, and shared the food equally.
Anyway, Black Mage asterisk. It's an alternate source of magic damage that doesn't require--but can still utilize--Spellcraft. Being able to fling higher tiers of magic spells without spend BP is pretty nice.
Moving on to Geyser Grotto! Another all-new dungeon, the gimmick here is that the geysers fill the air with certain affects. The first screen wants you to focus on magic by raising magic power, lowering magic defense, raising physical defense, and lowering physical attack. The second screen makes everyone Berserk. The third screen makes all hits critical, and the fourth screen maxes out everyone's BP at the start of battle.
At the end of the path, we catch up to Danzaburo and find Yoko along with the Sword of the Brave. The sword offers ultimate power for the ultimate price. Yoko agrees to pay it, the sword laughs evilly, and strikes at Danzaburo's sword arm. The price it takes is the most precious thing to her, and since that's her brother, it really takes the most precious thing to him: his swordsmanship. Get pranked, Yoko!!!
It's all extremely familiar to Yew. He went through something similar... Eerily similar, in fact! It turns out, the real prank... is on Yew! Ever since we met her, she wanted to make him face his inner demons. She wants the whole party to do that, in fact, but before she can really pry into Edea, Alternis Dim rushes in to save her. Yoko flees, but not before telling the gang to check the Fire Temple. They ask Alternis to join, but the party size is 4, so he says he's going after Yoko instead.
At the Fire Temple, we find that the fire crystal is shining. Shining perhaps a bit too much. In fact, it's gone berserk, just like in Bravely Default. The kaiser's scheme all along has been to pierce the boundary between worlds. That explains why he would need Agnès's powers, but she swears she would never do that again. She was missing for a bit, and she is feeling unwell. Hmmmm...
To close things out, Janne comes along. He reveals that the kaiser's aim in all this is to unmake the world and start everything over. Does Yew have it in him to stop them, even if it means killing Janne? The cutscene says no, but the battle says yes.
And when Janne goes down, they assume he falls to his death, but come on, we know better than that, don't we? Either way, our goal is laid out for us: we have to go to Florem and protect the water crystal from the kaiser's designs!
