HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHT

Pedro de Arteche
September 30, 1634 – May 13, 1709
Biography: Considered the outcast of his family, Pedro de Arteche chose to live a life of self-imposed poverty. His philosophy was that, in living meagerly, he could better appreciate life’s natural gifts. Revolted by the hedonism of his parents, Pedro moved to Seville, Spain at the age of 17. He converted to Sunni Islam, married Joan Vizcaíno, and became a scholar, gaining fame for his Spanish translation and analysis of the Oran fatwa. Historians frequently liken his contributions to academia to Ibn Rushd, whom Pedro deeply admired.
Genealogical Notes: Son of Gómez and Augustina de Arteche (née Moctezuma). Married Joan Vizcaíno on September 27, 1658. Father of Luis de Arteche. Grandfather of Juan Carlos de Arteche.

Location: Al-Khazneh; Petra, Jordan
Guide: Dr. Amelinda de la Cueva; Archaeology Professor, University of Salamanca

I wonder how far his reach has extended, and in what avenues? Art? Science? Politics? Have all of these things we take for granted been effectively touched by this one man?”
Reward (Association): Sebastián Piece #4 (Pedro’s older first cousin, twice removed)
