HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHT

Sebastián Cortés
January 21, 1527 – June 10, 1599
Biography: Sebastián Cortés, purported to be the illegitimate son of Isabel Moctezuma and Hernán Cortés, left Tenochtitlan early in his life. As an adult, Sebastian came to Bordeaux, France, wherein he accrued a fortune as a vintner, married Margot Lévêque, a daughter of one of the area’s barons, and tried to assimilate to European ways. Though he rarely spoke of his mother’s indigenous past, Sebastián’s bloodline is well-known in French history: from the artistic Chevalier family to the aristocratic Grenard family.
Genealogical Notes: Son of Hernán Cortés and Doña Isabel Moctezuma. Brother of Leonor Cortés. Married Margot Lévêque on April 13, 1551. Father of Anastasie, Daphné, and Lucien Cortés.

Location: Nazca Lines; Sechura Desert, Ica, Peru
Guide: Hani Battuta; Rupert’s colleague
Difficulty: Demanding

LEVELS

Level 24-1
Squares (Expert): 67
Expert Alterations: N/A
Hani’s Comments: “I’m so sorry to understand that Sebastian Grenard has done nothing to change his ways since our last encounter with him. Will that man never learn? Not only is he a thief, he’s a thief without much of a brain. How did he ever think he could outwit us?”
Reward (Association): Isabel Piece #4 (Sebastián’s mother)

Level 24-2
Squares (Expert): 99
Expert Alterations: N/A
Hani’s Comments: “The fact that the Nazca Lines have endured nature’s wrath over so many hundreds of years is mind-boggling, but there is a simple explanation. While the lines are often thought to have been drawn into sand, they were actually made by removing stones in the Pampa Colorada, revealing a lighter subsoil underneath the distinctive red stones.”
Reward (Association): Isabel Piece #5 (Sebastián’s mother)

Level 24-3
Squares (Expert): 98 (108)
Expert Alterations: A3, A4, A5, B4, B5, L4, L5, M3, M4, and M5 Added
Hani’s Comments: “The Nazca culture is known for its advanced handicrafts, namely their pottery and textiles. The pottery is unique in its wide range of colors, all the effect of firing. The textiles boast complex designs, nearly reminiscent of the Jewel Boards themselves.”
Reward (Association): Isabel Piece #6 (Sebastián’s mother)

Level 24-4
Squares (Expert): 87 (83)
Expert Alterations: E11, G8, G9, and G10 Omitted
Hani’s Comments: “Look at these pieces of cloth draped at that merchant’s stall. They are clearly ancient and seem to show the markings of descending jewels. Do you suppose that the Nazca have been playing Jewel Boards since before modern times?”
Reward (Association): Hernán Piece #4 (Sebastián’s father)
