May 29, 1503 – February 3, 1570
Biography: A child of Moctezuma II by way of María Miahuaxochitl, Don Pedro Moctezuma is considered to be the principal male heir of the Aztec Empire, for he is the only of his sons to be recognized by Hernán Cortés. He gained favor and prominence from Cortés, and was given oversight of rebuilding part of Tenochtitlan. Don Pedro’s descendants are recognized as the Dukes of Moctezuma de Tultengo, a dukedom of Spanish nobility.
Genealogical Notes: Son of Moctezuma II and María Miahuaxochitl. Half-brother of Doña Isabel Moctezuma. Married Catalina Quiasuchitl on July 31, 1546. Uncle of Sebastian and Leonor Cortés. Father of Diego Luis Moctezuma.

Ana’s Comments: “Machu Picchu is quite important to the people of Peru. As one of the only sites to have not been destroyed by the Spanish during the conquest of the Incas, it holds tremendous cultural and social significance.”
Reward (Association): Acatlán Piece #1 (Moctezuma II’s mistress)

Level 27-2
Squares (Expert): 102 (105)
Traps (Expert): 1 (2)
Expert Alterations: Trap Added on A1; A5, A7, A9, and B10 Omitted; A2, B1, B2, B3, C2, C3, and D3 Added
Ana’s Comments: “You should know that Machu Picchu was unknown to most of the world until quite recently. In 1911, Hiram Bingham III, an American researcher and historian, brought its existence to the attention of the world at large, although he has been ridiculed for having taken artifacts from the ancient city.”
Reward (Association): Francisca Piece #6 (Don Pedro’s daughter-in-law)

Level 27-3
Squares (Expert): 90 (87)
Traps (Expert): 7 (9)
Expert Alterations: Traps Added on E1 and G1; F1 Omitted
Ana’s Comments: “The Incas began building Machu Picchu around 1430 AD above the Urubamba Valley. Due to its desertion after what scholars believe to be a smallpox outbreak that wiped out its denizens, the area is often referred to as ‘The Lost City of the Incas’. Although it’s a misnomer, given that the citadel was built as an estate for Pachacuti, the architect of the Inca Empire, the name stuck.”
Reward (Association): Teotlalco Piece #2 (Isabel’s mother)

Level 27-4
Squares (Expert): 90 (88)
Traps (Expert): 9 (11)
Expert Alterations: Traps Added on E4 and I4
Ana’s Comments: “Many believe that Machu Picchu was first plundered by a German businessman, Augusto Berns. It is a sad reality that so many of the ancient and beautiful sites in the world have fallen victim to such thoughtless theft. It stands to be mentioned that it’s quite possible a Jewel Board could have been among the riches taken from Machu Picchu, whether by the conquistadors or rival empires.”
Reward (Association): Acatlán Piece #2 (Moctezuma II’s mistress)
