Leonor Cortés Moctezuma
April 13, 1528 – February 9, 1594
Biography: Leonor Cortés, the daughter conceived with Hernán Cortés by Isabel Moctezuma, was born out of wedlock and, thusly, given little chance to claim rights to the riches of either Moctezuma or Cortés. Nevertheless, she chose to adopt both surnames, utilizing their inherent prestige to woo Juan de Tolosa, a conquistador who discovered silver deposits near the modern town of Zacatecas, Mexico, which he also helped found. Leonor was a kind woman who never felt she received less than she deserved.
Genealogical Notes: Daughter of Hernán Cortés and Doña Isabel Moctezuma. Sister of Sebastián Cortés. Married Juan de Tolosa on September 19, 1550. Mother of Juan, Leonor, and Isabel de Tolosa.
