HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHT

Catalina Moctezuma (née Quiasuchitl)
November 12, 1522 – July 7, 1591
Biography: Catalina Quiasuchitl married into the Moctezuma family when she became the wife of Don Pedro Moctezuma. A descendant of Toltec royalty, Catalina was an indigenous woman, a fact she wore proudly in the face of Spanish takeover. Her codices on Mesoamerican civilizations, written in conjunction with inquisitive Spanish scholars, are still cited to this day.
Genealogical Notes: Married Don Pedro Moctezuma on July 31, 1546. Aunt of Sebastian and Leonor Cortés. Mother of Diego Luis Moctezuma.

Location: Machu Picchu; Urubamba, Cuzco, Peru
Guide: Ana Llaqta; Quechua Tour Guide
Difficulty: Demanding

CONDITIONS

Five Common Jewels (Jade, Onyx Zebras, Rubies, Seashells, and Tiger’s Eyes) plus Delicate Zircons

LEVELS

Level 29-1
Squares (Expert): 94 (92)
Cases (Expert): 6 (8)
Expert Alterations: Cases Added on B7 and K7
Ana’s Comments: “Look here at this stone wall. It’s important to note that no mortar was used between the stones. The Inca people have a strong history as masons, and considered using mortar to hold together their walls a subpar building method. Using no mortar allows for seismic shifting without much consequence.”
Reward (Association): Teotlalco Piece #3 (Isabel’s mother)

Level 29-2
Squares (Expert): 84 (82)
Cases (Expert): 4 (6)
Expert Alterations: Cases Added on E2 and E4
Ana’s Comments: “When the jewels fall in the Jewel Boards that you play, I can’t help but remark at how similar this is to the shifting of the stones that make up the magnificent structures of Machu Picchu. The ability to shift without causing destruction shows incredible engineering and attention to detail that is considerable for structures this ancient.”
Reward (Association): Teotlalco Piece #4 (Isabel’s mother)

Level 29-3
Squares (Expert): 102 (100)
Cases (Expert): 2 (4)
Expert Alterations: Cases Added on A1 and C1
Ana’s Comments: “Surely you are aware of Moctezuma’s children and the battles they fought to return their family’s riches to their rightful owners. You are, no doubt, an extension of this. You are so very close to being able to prove that the Golden Jewel Board belongs with you. Do not get discouraged.”
Reward (Association): Acatlán Piece #3 (Moctezuma II’s mistress)

Level 29-4
Squares (Expert): 131 (127)
Cases (Expert): 3 (5)
Expert Alterations: Cases Added on C1 and K1; C3 and K3 Omitted
Ana’s Comments: “My days are filled now with showing this awe-inspiring place to tourists, who walk through it like a museum. However, keep in mind that Machu Picchu was far more than just a place to visit when it was built. The people who lived here had a vibrant community, and everything in this place had a very specific purpose.”
Reward (Association): Acatlán Piece #4 (Catalina’s grandfather-in-law)
