HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHT

Joan de Arteche (née Vizcaíno)
October 18, 1631 – February 15, 1720
Biography: A deeply spiritual Maliki woman, Joan Vizcaíno lived a simple life. The only major change she experienced was moving from her birthplace of Rabat, Morocco to Seville, Spain, where she met her husband, Pedro de Arteche. A traditionalist, Joan’s greatest joy was taking care of her small family and baking for the less fortunate in her community. Despite her family’s status as Moriscos, a key reason for the conversion of her son, Luis, following his courtship of Jeanne Joliet, a Roman Catholic, Joan was beloved for her generosity and benevolence. She was rarely seen without an apron tied at her waist and a hand extended in giving.
Genealogical Notes: Married Pedro de Arteche on September 27, 1658. Mother of Luis de Arteche. Grandmother of Juan Carlos de Arteche.

Amelinda’s Comments: “Walk through the Siq with me. This dramatic entryway nearly dulls the senses to the magnificence just past the high walls. Truly, it is a majestic piece of architecture, worthy of being shown on the silver screen.”
