The world opens up significantly around this point, and this is clearly reflected in the power of the wild Pokemon available at this stage. There's no shortage of powerful options, including those hitting Erika's Pokemon significantly. In the old versions, what did I have against Erika I guess? Fearow and Dodrio? That's a world of difference right here.
There's regular Ninetales available in the wild with Flamethrower already learnt, Alolan-Ninetales with Ice Beam, Kadabra that can be evolved and taught Psychic from Saffron so that it doesn't have Night Shade for attacking any more... Better yet, Raichu is a psychic-type of comparable special attack and speed to Alakazam with much better bulk to boot thanks to being 2 levels higher and STAB Thunderbolt access. I end up using all four in this video.
Mega Drain is the TM offered by Erika, and all of her Pokemon know the move. Despite what you may expect, it has the power of Giga Drain and probably tries to replace it since Giga Drain wasn't a move in original RBY? It's a great TM to have since it instantly makes any grass-type you catch later really competent and it can be used to extend the coverage of Haunter/Gengar.
Tangela with its low special defence and the offensively-oriented Weepinbell die easily to the two different Ninetales versions, the latter apparently requiring a higher damage roll, something I didn't notice on my only other attempt at Erika. A lucky freeze proc ensures I don't get to find out if Poison Jab would've OHKO'd my A-Ninetales or not (probably not?).
Alakazam goes up against Vileplume, Erika's strongest. You'd think it's the safest matchup, but Mega Drain chances to crit, OHKOing Zam surprisingly. Raichu's Psychic is sufficient to secure our victory.
The four Pokemon here may be great but they don't last very long. After Pokemon Tower, the range of available wild Pokemon greatly expands and there's less reason to be using any of the four monsters here when the likes of Starmie are yours.
