Pokemon Let's Go, Eevee! - No Exp Part 1: Brock & Rival (Cerulean City)
A playlist with every single Pokemon 0 exp challenge I've done so far (as of now, 230 videos and 13 games of different generations and regions):

I promised this would be inevitable, and if you've been following this channel for some time you've most likely seen the trend. Way back in 2011 (time flies huh), I started my first 0 exp challenge in Silver, going back to Yellow later, and subsequently doing a 0 exp challenge in every single generation of Pokemon, some of which took extra hard work and tools to set up (the later ones in particular). This run is made possible thanks to CFW and Dio Vento's publicly available mods for the Let's Go games (so you can play the same challenge without going through all the work to set it up, which I did).
I've done a Yellow 0 exp run, as well as a Leaf Green one. Why return to Kanto again? Firstly, Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu is a gen 7 game, like SM/USUM, with plentiful mechanical changes that simply weren't there in gen 1/3. There are now physical fire-type moves and special ghost-type moves as there have been for many generations now. There are more moves and options, like the Alolan forms acquired through trading (they're mostly not too hot imho). At the same time, the game's also been simplified. There are no wild battles, no abilities, no held items... It feels very different from the regular Pokemon experience with elements of Pokemon Go in it.I think the tightness of the things missing could create challenges otherwise not possible; for example, I can't rely on Sturdy + Endeavour tactics to cheese a tough battle anymore. My beloved Guts+Facade strat doesn't work for the first time since a really long time ago too (GSC huh?).
The rules, besides 0 exp, include the usual species clause, no legends and no items used in battle. I also intend not to use stat boosters seeing how enormous of a difference they can make and not engage in co-op play. Some suspicion tells me this run runs the risk of being impossible at some point. Should this really happen, I may end up ignoring one of the rules and I'll have to choose the appropriate one. Let's just go (Eevee!) and see what happens. We'll see.
Brock's the first gym battle, and this time we've got not one but two 4x effective Pokemon. While Let's Go Pikachu has Oddish available, with a boosted 40 BP Absorb targeting sp. def. and draining health, probably cheesing the entire fight alone, Eevee players like moi have Bellsprout to rely on, Vine Whip hitting a much sturdier physical defence stat and hp recovery being nowhere in sight.
I also bring Bulbasaur from the Viridian Forest, available as a rare special spawn. Considering how elusive it is and how ineffective savescumming is, it's lv. 5. If I'd started using Lures earlier in this run (which I did when I noticed how long it takes me to get a Pokemon of the highest level and of a relevant nature), I would've got a lv. 7 one even, with Lure's effect making rare/special spawns more likely, spawning more Pokemon period and guaranteeing everybody is 1 level above the maximum possible in an area. Lures are great, albeit expensive, and at some point in this run I stop being so stingy with money.
Both Bulbasaur and Bellsprout (the latter hitting much harder) need assistance in order to face their opponents 1on1 in spite of the 4x effectiveness. Geodude and Onyx both need to be growled at once or twice, and using a move like Tail Whip is a good idea to turn their attacks into 2HKOs. Their level advantage is all too noticeable this early in the game; however, Geodude's sole move is Tackle and Onyx has nothing stronger than Headbutt and Rock Throw, both running off very poor attack even for the first gym.
We pass Mt Moon and enter Cerulean City not long after. I meant to face Rival on Route 22 but entered Viridian Forest first to catch the Pokemon there (like the super cool lv. 6 Beedrill) first, and when I went back, my rival (notGary!) had disappeared. So this is my first fight against him that isn't a Pikachu vs Eevee solo.
Pidgey is his lead, Mt Moon's Geodude being a good counter with SE Rock Throw and a resistance to all its moves (Gust may target the low sp def but Pidgey's own sp atk is nothing home to write about). We want to take little punishment here for Geodude to pull the final matchup in this fight. Oddish is switching in next and there are many counters to it, any flier basically working just fine. Zubat can't be poisoned however and resists both of Oddish's STABs so that's our counter.
NotGary's final Pokemon is the most ridiculous thing though; you'll never believe me. Watch it use Double Team just once and then any matchup you might've thought favourable will be reversed as you constantly fail to connect any normally accurate move. Geodude almost loses this one, coming out victorious just barely in the end.
After this, we prepare for a surprisingly hard battle against Misty.
