Much like Kukui and Guzma, Molayne used to be a trial captain back in the day (supposedly before he stopped being a teenager and had to quit). He specialises in the steel-type, which is strong defensively. Molayne needs to be defeated for us to begin the electric-type trial, but doesn't have any storyline significance himself. He's not that hard at all, but because the next video is loooong, I decided against combining the two together.

He leads with Skarm who's known for having two weaknesses - fire and electric, and the moves penetrating them better be special as Skamory's phys defence is exceptionally high. The fire-types are a bit underwhelming at this point, but there are some good electrics, including Magnemite and Electrabuzz. If the player has enough patience, he can not only catch an Electabuzz via SOS battle but wait for one holding a Electirizer to have an Electivire really early in this game. All this effort is overkill for what is actually a rather mediocre mon for this challenge imho - Electivire has no notable electric-type moves and it's defensively worse than Magnemite and has less utility (which Magnemite has a ton of thanks to Sturdy). Just like I didn't bother getting a lv. 9-12 route 3 Salamence for this challenge (it is way too hard to hold a chain with 0 exp mons, though I imagine a Growlithe with a few X Attacks and Defends and a large inventory of Leppa Berries can go very far, but this is just a guess), I felt like Electrivire would be a similar waste of time.

Magnemite has the perfect typing to take on Skarm however, resisting steel and flying type moves 4x. A combination of Metal Sound and Charge Beam will do the trick, though the player should be aware between the interaction between Charge Beam's special buffs and Molayne's AI wanting to switch Skarm out for Dugtrio at some point.

Dugtrio will come next, and it's the Alolan variety with beautiful blond hair and a steel typing. The Diglett family in Alola has been surprisingly underwhelming in the challenger's hands in this challenge - to think I expected another Excadrill...

Dugtrio is walled really hard by a water-type, with its ground-type move being special, Sucker Punch becoming its best attack against said mons. Somebody like Gyarados would do a particularly job defending against its attacks, but I've never bothered catching a Gyarados yet (the Elite Four section may or may not change that) because Waterfall only comes in the postgame and Aqua Tail isn't learnt until much later. Also, it's a PITA to catch one at the desired level at any point in the game.

If Gyarados's water STAB of choice will be Scald for most of the game, we might as well continue using that underlevelled Wishiwashi. It's still only OHKOing the frail Alolan-Dugtrio after the MysticWater / Expert Belt boost, but it's no surprise considering Dugtrio is about as specially bulky as Torracat was in the last video, and we needed the 20% attack boost to OHKO that one too.

Metang is the last one, and while you might be afraid, it's nothing like Metagross offensively, not even at the present point in the game. Grimer tanks it very easily even without Eviolite and 2HKOs with STAB Payback without needing any boosts, so I'm pretty sure it was Grimer that I gave my Amulet Coin to.

I believe this is the last Grimer you can catch in the wild. It's a pity Muk isn't available because imho it's one of the best slowmons you could ever use in-game in the mainline Pokemon series. With Poison Touch and Black Sludge, it's a joy to use in a regular playthrough of the game.
