The first battle against one of the game's antagonists, arguably the main one. Lusamine is faced right after Guzma, but it's in our best interest to make considerable adjustments to our party before we tackle the fight.

There's a certain theme to Lusamine's party (cute, mysterious-looking Pokemon), but the Pokemon come in all types so you can't really put her into a box as a type specialist. Her party changes little between the two battles you have against her, and it's difficult to say where she is at her best. In this battle, we've just gone through a portion of the game with a lot of trainer fighting, without the possibility of gaining experience in this challenge. This is why we've been underlevelled - both for Guzma and here.

A glaring weakness Lusamine's party has is her disturbing lack of coverage. Three out of five Pokemon can be shut down entirely with a Pokemon that has the correct set of immunities - Lilligant with a grass-type block, Milotic more or less shut down with a water-type absorber (it does have Flail, but it's Milotic we're talking about here), and Bewear can do nothing to any of the ghosts. Perplexingly, the same is applicable to the same three mons in the 2nd Lusamine fight as well.

The lead Clefable isn't a huge threat offensively, but it sure is difficult to take down. Cosmic Power increases its defences, and there's Metronome which is never used; most of the time, Clefable can be seen spamming Moonblast, which does respectable damage to underlevelled mons. Gengar wins in a 1 vs 1 matchup when at full health no problem, with the Sludge Bomb + Venoshock being accessible should Clefable be unlucky enough to be poisoned by the former, helping us get rid of it earlier.

YOU WERE EXPECTING CLEFABLE TO TAKE A SLUDGE BOMB... BUT IT'S ME, MISMAGIUS!

Something unpredictable occurs in this duel, Lusamine scenting that she's not winning this matchup no matter what and switching out to Mismagius. She tanks the move well and threatens with an OHKO on Gengar immediately, clearly outspeeding by a lot. My plan for Mismagius doesn't involve either sacrificing Gengar or having to switch out, so I go for the lesser evil in the situation and sacrifice Absol - the initial plan was using Mimikyu with its Disguise to let Absol take a hit and OHKO while surviving a special attack.

This time, Mimikyu does the same hoping that Gengar will grab the kill instead, but a full paralysis proc causes Mimikyu to emerge victorious in the duel instead. The Light Screen it sets up proves useful in Turtonator's matchup against Lilligant, discouraging the use of Petal Dance entirely. She goes for status spam and since we've got the correct held berry ready she dies in two hits. Lilligant actually can't damage somebody with Sap Sipper, like hidden ability Miltank or Goomy (who I have no clue if you can catch at this point; it honestly sucks too much to matter in this challenge), but Turtonator destroys it much more efficiently.

Milotic is next, and does anyone remember the Paras that prevailed against the Totem Wishiwashi? It only fears Flail here, which doesn't even get more powerful until really low on HP, and if Milotic forgets to use Safeguard on the 1st turn (its AI is really bad - it doesn't mind trying to use Hydro Pump on Paras occasionally) we can Toxic it and then wear it down with Fury Cutter and other goodies. It's a pity Paras can't learn Infestation. I switch out to Alolan-Golem when the Flails get too powerful.

What remains then is Bewear, which as I previously mentioned cannot hurt ghosts. Even a scrubby one can win with Toxic or Curse or something, but Gengar does the job the fastest.

Will Lusamine be a bigger challenge in the 2nd fight? We shall find out very soon.
