The truth is, I've never really gelled with third-person shooters. It's funny. When I was young, I always assumed that I'd do better with that particular sub-genre over FPSes, because "Doom clones" would often cause me to freeze up whenever any enemy would jump out and surprise me, leading me to get my ass handed to me. Eventually, I managed to get over that weakness of mine. But despite my best efforts, I still can't wrap my head around the third-person variety.
I was hoping that a game in the genre developed by Platinum Games, the team behind such classics as Bayonetta and MadWorld, would've made things click. But I'm already about 10 missions into the game... and I'm still somewhat confused. Honestly, it took me a frankly embarrassing amount of time in order to figure out where my character's health was being depicted -- and to be frank, I think I preferred the way Dead Space handled it.
Having said that, at least the story's the over-the-top ham-and-cheesefest I was hoping for. And it did seem like I was better able to understand the gameplay mechanics as I continue onward... even if being constantly reminded of how many times I died while trying to figure things out is a little demoralizing.
