Wings 2 - Aces High (also known as Sky Mission in Japan and Blazing Skies in Europe) is an arcade flight simulator jointly developed by NAMCO and Malibu Interactive, and published for the Super Nintendo\Super Famicom in 1992\93. In the game, the player chooses from between 5 different pilots, who each start off with a base attribute (mechanic, gunner, excellent pilot, etc.), and then can be improved further by increasing their skills after a sucessful mission. Missions do have a good variety, including straifing, dogfighting, and bombing, but these missions are linear, and are played in the same order each time. Players can switch pilots between missions, helping to round out your roster of skilled pilots. Graphically speaking the game is really good, using a mode-7 style background in dogfighting mode, and generally offering colorful graphics and detailed sprite work. Gameplay wise the game is... meh? It's not a bad game, but it is very hard, not necessarily from actual difficulty, but from the controls. Flying is incredibly difficult, and it's very easy to crash into another aircraft or into the ground. Dogfighting is also hard, because the camera is from a 3rd person perspective, and aiming is difficult. It's not a bad game, so much as a problematic game, and despite trying four different times, I was unable to not crash into something at least once. As an additional note, this game was billed as a sequel to Cinemaware's classic Amiga game Wings!, originally released in 1990. Why? Not really sure to be honest. Wings! was only ever released for the Commodore Amiga, and was produced by Cinemaware. I could not find anyone who stated that NAMCO owned or had access to any of the Cinemaware titles or I.P.s, so for the moment, this will remain a weird marketing tactic. No sequel to this game was published to my knowledge, but the Wings! series in general has seen a Game Boy Advance version, as well as a subpar remake of the original Wings! in 2015.
