Quickplay - Columns [Sega Genesis]
Columns is a falling block puzzle game developed and published by Sega, originally for the arcades, and then ported to the Sega Genesis and Sega Game Gear (1990-1991). Columns, like many puzzle games from this time, is similar to Tetris, in that players are tasked with clearing lines of falling blocks from the screen for points. However, unlike Tetris, Columns allows the player to clear blocks only if three or more of the gems match (like Bejeweled). These matches can be horizontal, vertical, diagonal, or all of the above, just so long as the lines actually match up. Ocassionally the player will be given a power up which will clear all of a specific gem from the screen when used. Players can play solo or against each other for high scores. Graphically the game looks good, though the nature of the game limits the amount of colors and backgrounds. Likewise the music tracks are good, but are also limited in quantity. The game spawned a series, which included the arcade exclusive Columns II, and Columns III, which also saw a Sega Genesis release.
