Rockstar/Take 2 and Bethesda mod TOS - my thoughts
00:42 explaining the title, 2:11 Proton Tricks (tool) example, 4:30 Skyblivion mod example, 5:39 the care and love that goes in to mods, 7:33 I do my best to balance my passion, 9:04 the cost of video games, 10:47 the Wikipedia chart, 11:58 Example of what I think is ok, 13:52 Linux example, 15:09 finishing up
I know I am late to it as I was busy. I wanted to bring it up because I think this kind of discussion is important. These companies will not be the only ones trying to destroy modding
TLDR:
I mentioned that one of the tools used to alter a games behavior to ensure it works (Proton Tricks) is by definition a mod. These TOS's will affect them as well if they are not properly written
I mentioned Skyblivion and Skyrim as examples of what modding can do for the lifespan of the game. I then talked about the care and love that goes in to a lot of mods like Skyblivion
I talked about my passion for wanting games to do better and how I try to balance it. I recognize that money has to come from somewhere to create new games or remaster them. There is obviously a line on how that should be done
Then I went in to a discussion about the cost of video games and what I would consider to be ok for monetization
I said that it would be ok to monetize a mod kit but not the individual mods (if it became necessary to get to that point). People should be allowed to pick the mods that fit them best. Monetizing every mod will affect the choice in the mod listings
I used Linux as an example to say if you are going to monetize a mod kit, make it worth it. Give support to modders so they can create their mods in Windows or Linux. Having versatility would make it valuable
At the end I went in to a tangent about why Linux should get more support. Recording ends there
