YO. This manhwa’s plot?? Illustration?? Twists and turns?? They’re all so freaking good. I’ve been reading these types of stories out of guilty pleasure, and so far Roxana Agriche feels the most “cruel” to me. She is not misunderstood, nor does she childishly label herself as a villainess like most female leads in manhwas. Though ironically born into the Agriche of The Black, Roxana is a gray character: she’s not flat out evil, and yet her moral compass is not perfectly clean either. This girl is unhinged at times, manipulative, and absolutely ruthless to those who stand in her way. From the serpent-like smile, the red eyes, the lethal butterflies, and the poisonous blood that paints her face almost all the time, she carries a potent aura that suggests danger and power. In a way, I think Roxana is the kind of figure the Agriche wants to be but never could: cunning, strategic, calculating, intimidating, and always having the upper hand. None of the family members read people well like her, and overplayed their violent tactics to assert power. The only person who comes close to being as smart as her is probably Dion (the half-brother), but knowing his twisted character (the disgusting sadism and his obsession with seeing Roxana in pain), I can’t really imagine him to best Roxana in any way possible. From what I’m seeing, she plays him like a toy, pretending to be submissive one moment, then cruelly confessing that she hated him. In many manhwas, the antagonistic characters are always depicted as appearing average with little striking features, so having Dion being exceptionally handsome, and having the female lead acknowledging his malignity with so much spite gives me joy. It’s so refreshing. I can’t wait to see what Roxana will pull out next. She is one of the most impressive “villainess” female leads I’ve seen so far.
