Sea of Stars - Ch. 38 - To Kill the Clouds
Last time, we sailed to the Sacrosanct Spires and confronted a weird cult of Birdmen. Our goal was to reach the giant stone statue 'Es'tristae', constructed by B'st's people, as a sort of failsafe backup power for the Speedball Travel Network. Now that we've succeeded in our first goal of reactivating the network, we can travel to Sky Base and hopefully stop whatever is producing those dark clouds.
CHAPTER 38 - TO KILL THE CLOUDS
So we left off at Es'tristae's Lookout. There's a Speedball Travel Network pod right here, so if you're ready, get in and choose Sky Base. Well... I think it's the only option, anyway. This area is not too tough, or long. Nor are the treasures all that tricky to find (although, I'm now realizing I missed a Rainbow Conch!). A couple of the monsters here have special moves that'll pack a punch, but nothing you can't handle at this point.
The treasures here are:
Rainbow Conch, Rosewood Cork, Plasma Daggers, Sparkmesh Cape, Music Sheet #7, Question Pack #8.
If you miss the weapons and armor here, or if you've missed the recent ones from Sacrosanct Spires, don't kick yourself too much. There's actually a vending machine towards the end of this area that will sell you anything you might've missed. So when you get to this point: stock up, cook, rest, save, etc.
As you proceed to the next area, Serai will notice that 'The Catalyst' is up ahead...
Boss Battle - The Catalyst, Repeater, Salvoer, Blaster, Repair Unit
The Catalyst is a large computer, or AI entity that was used to turn the people of Repine into cyborgs. Thus, Serai has a particular grudge against The Catalyst and made it a point to mention earlier she wanted to destroy it. When The Catalyst spots Serai and the group, it'll activate some sort of security program.
Two walls will rise, separating you from The Catalyst. The first wall will start off with two Repeaters, a basic machine-gun type attacker. When you inflict enough damage, they'll break and reveal a Salvoer underneath. These will launch missiles at all three party members and do slightly more damage. When you defeat these, you'll proceed to the second wall.
The second wall will start with two Repeaters and two Salvoers. Here, the Repeaters will change to Blasters when they receive enough damage. Blasters use a laser-beam weapon on one party member. When the Salvoers break, they'll become Repair Units, which heal one target for 85 HP. When these break, you will proceed now to the final area.
The Catalyst will be flanked by two columns. Each column will have three machines: two Blasters and one Salvoer. When you destroy these, I believe some of them become Repair Units, but I'm unsure if any of them change into something else. Unfortunately, I destroyed these too quickly to find out.
You're unable to target or damage The Catalyst until all the machines on the columns are finally destroyed. Then, similar to the Dweller or Torment fight, you'll have a few turns to attack The Catalyst before the cycle repeats and the machines regenerate. Once again, this fight is made infinitely easier if you have the Magic Pocket. Plus by now, you should have enough ingredients to easily whip out a half dozen Peach Strudels.
In theory, you could easily spam skills and combos until The Catalyst is vulnerable. Then very carefully, keep delaying the timer on The Catalyst's turn by having Serai use Disorient and using the Magic Pocket to replenish her MP before her turn.
The Catalyst doesn't seem to have a lot of HP, so you should be able to take it out pretty quickly this way. Even if you can't target The Catalyst while the machines are out, the Repair Units can heal it. So just keep that in mind.
Anyway, after the fight, we'll unfortunately run into a roadblock. The Catalyst apparently has some very sophisticated encryption. The plan is to go back to Zale and Valere's home world to speak with Cael at Clockwork Castle. But first, it's time to take ourselves a break.
Joins us next time for Chapter 39 - 'Back to Home World'.
