Seijin Plays FFT 1.3034 Easytype, Part 34 : Inside of Riovanes Castle
After the failure of the geomancer approach, I changed my strategy to this. After a few uninteresting failures (Crush Punch OHKOing Ramza), the one time I managed to get past Wiegraf made me go through Velius as well. It's this very video. Now, I know what you're all thinking. Archers are bad, right? Right?
In this battle, I can pull off Charge+10's and Charge+20's, and that, my friends, is very strong. In version 1.3037, if I recall correctly, the entire archer skill set was changed. No more charges. Instead, the skills are based on status effects for the most part, similar to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I have yet to play a version past 1.3034, so I cannot tell how efficient they are in general, but it seems most people are happy with them.
I oriented Ramza entirely towards offense, with a Windslash Bow, Twist Headband, Power Sleeve, Power Wrist (I didn't have any Bracer) and Attack Up, as well as Auto Potion for reaction ability to concentrate on the offensive.
As for Velius, my strategy consists of a mix of Return 2 to prevent him from getting turns, and stat breaks to reduce his damage output. Velius has Counter Flood for reaction ability, and it's very, very powerful. We're looking at 200+ damage per hit, and of course, with the petrify chance. That is why I made sure to have abilities to cure the petrify status : Seijin has Esuna, The Man has Stigma Magic and Ramza has Soft.
Something rather interesting happened at the beginning of the Velius battle. He casted Titan. But, Sara could cast Float just in time, which nullified Velius' summon. Trust me, that wasn't preplanned, she just happened to have it learned (from some enemy crystal long ago). The float status nullifies earth damage. Yes, that includes the summon, Titan. ^_^
Seijin was nearly useless in this battle. I made her an oracle (Pray Faith) with White Magic secondary. Pray Faith was her only Yin Yang Magic skill. The idea was to use it on Sara to boost the effectiveness of her Return 2, the skill that puts Velius' CT back to 0. It turned out to be nearly useless because Sara had a whopping 92% of success already, which surprised me. Since that was my first time reaching Velius in my initial attempts, I didn't yet know that I didn't need Pray Faith to have a reliable success rate. I also didn't yet know how much speed I'd need to always be able to cast it again in time so that he absolutely never gets a turn. But honestly, that skill working on a boss like this is already broken enough as it is, if not too much. (I don't know if it's only in easytype or if it's also working in the regular 1.3, though.) I even sometimes didn't know what to do in my free turns with Seijin!
The battle isn't too special. I quickly dispose of the three demons, then I lower Velius' stats (I'm really not interested in damaging him until his stats are low), and then I finally go for the kill. I use Return 2 as much as possible throughout the battle.
At 20:33, I made the mistake of moving Dead Fish in range to use Mind Break on Velius... without having enough MP to do so. And with a crystal nearby. Oops.
And yes, The Man was caught three times in a Return 2. That's why he's The Man!
