Shantae (Game Boy Color) Retro Review: Does It Hold Up? - NichePlays
Originally released for the Game Boy Color in 2002, almost a year into the life of its successor the Game Boy Advance, Shantae is a sidescrolling Metroidvania with an emphasis on streamlined and fairly linear exploration for the genre. A cult classic in its time, Shantae has since spawned several well-received sequels. But does Shantae hold up?
I personally think that, despite some issues in its design and execution, Shantae is absolutely worth a playthrough. This is especially true with the games modern Switch port, which was published by Limited Run Games and was handled by Modern Vintage Gamer. It's a really great release of the game and comes in at a very competitive price ($10 USD). It's a great take on games like Castlevania II: Simon's Quest and The Legend of Zelda II: Link's Adventure, taking those game's emphasis on exploration and streamlining it into a more easily digestible and less obtuse format.
