Metroid (NES) Retro Review: Does It Hold Up? - NichePlays
Metroid is a 1986 adventure/metroidvania game for the Famicom Disk System/Nintendo Entertainment System. Developed in collaboration by Nintendo's R&D1 team and Intelligent Systems, the game tells the tale of Samus Aran's journey to planet Zebes to stop the evil Mother Brain and her Space Pirates from using stolen Metroid samples for... well... generally nefarious reasons.
Despite strong reviews at its release and spawning a popular franchise that is still going strong (with the release of the game's 5th sequential entry Metroid Dread arriving on the Nintendo Switch/Switch Lite/Switch OLED this October, as well as the [hopeful] release of a Metroid Prime Trilogy collection and the eventual release of Metroid Prime 4), the original Metroid has long held the reputation of being an antiquated and dated game. While one can't really debate its importance in the canon of video games, one also has to address its outdated mechanics, frustrating password system, and the limitations placed on it by running on Nintendo's 8-bit hardware.
In short? It's a great game, no doubt, but players curious to experience it are better off with its incredible Game Boy Advance Remake, Metroid: Zero Mission. Alternatively, if you *need* to play the original game, players may be better suited playing the Famicom Disk System version or playing through Metroid on an emulator to take advantage of some of emulation's inherent quality of life improvements.
