Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku (Game Boy Advance) Retro Review: Does It Hold Up? - NichePlays
Released in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance, DBZ: The Legacy of Goku is a top town action RPG that tells the tale of Goku's battles against the Saiyans, death, trip to Namek, and battle against Freiza. Despite mixed to negative reviews, the game got two sequels titled "Legacy of Goku II" and "Buu's Fury," respectively. It features gameplay that alludes to 16-bit classics like Secret of Mana and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, albeit greatly simplified and streamlined. The Legacy of Goku has spiritual successors in subsequent Dragon Ball Z titles that have tried to similarly create a world more tailor-made for exploration, such as in Dragon Ball Z: Sagas and in 2020's Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, which is getting a Nintendo Switch release in September 2021. But does it hold up? More importantly, how does it compare to newer DBZ games on the market like Dragon Ball FighterZ or even Super Dragon Ball Heroes?
While I have a lot of nostalgia for Dragon Ball Z and the numerous games based on the series from the turn of the century, The Legacy of Goku fails to prove itself worth revisiting in the modern-day. This is largely due to the number of glitches in the game, it's poor storytelling/pacing, and the emergence of numerous other DBZ games that have done a better job of telling the entire DBZ story, as opposed to poorly telling the first third of it. While not outright terrible, the game does very little to stand out and is a mostly forgettable experience. Honestly, players would be better suited playing through a newer DBZ title if they're interested in reliving the series, such as the aforementioned DBZ Kakarot, or DBZ Xenoverse, which offers character customization and multiplayer. I would personally recommend the Switch release as the portability it offers means that you could stream Dragon Ball, DBZ, DBGT, or Dragon Ball Super on your TV while you play :)
