Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Sega Genesis) Retro Review: Does It Hold Up? | NichePlays
Released in 1992 for the Sega Genesis (also known as the Sega Mega Drive), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a side-scrolling platformer that follows Sonic and his new sidekick Tails on a mission to stop Dr. Robotnik (sans Jim Carrey) and his latest invention The Death Egg. And Knuckles is there, but only kinda/if you play the right version of the game.
Developed by Sega Technical Institute, Sonic 2 builds on the formula found in the first Sonic game and places an emphasis on dazzling speed and action while simultaneously including slower and more traditional platforming segments.
Upon its release, Sonic 2 received stellar reviews and quickly became the second best-selling game for Sega’s 16-but hardware. And almost 30 years later, it’s easy to see why. The game manages to hold up incredibly well all these years later and hasn’t aged a day. It’s one of the most iconic platforms from the genre’s hay day, and is absolutely worth playing on ANY of the platforms it’s on (which include the Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360/One/Series X, the PlayStation 3/4/5, as well as mobile, PC, and Sega’s assorted classic/mini consoles).
