I start the fourth row of characters, well that is the case in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. 4, but anyway, I play as Fox McCloud in Classic Mode. Fox did get some nerfs from Brawl to Smash 4, but he did get some improvements in some changes into this game, and the updates to this game did improve some of Fox's special moves in this game.
Going over Classic Mode, in Rounds 1 to 3, you fight characters in their default costumes, in Rounds 4 and 5, you fight characters in their alternate costumes, in Round 6, you fight against the Fighting Mii Team, and in the last round, you fight Master Hand, or on Intensity 3.0 or higher, you fight Crazy Hand as well, and on an even higher Intensity, you fight against Master Core.
Then Fox's custom moves, as this is the only game in the series to have custom moves, first is his Blaster, the first custom variant is Impact Blaster, which deals more damage and knock opponent's back, but they cannot be fired rapidly and the lasers move slowly, making it like Fox's Blaster in Super Smash Bros. 64, and making it identical to Falco's Blaster. The other custom variant for Blaster is Charge Blaster, Fox charges up a large laser shot that deals more damage, but it moves slower. Then his side special, Fox Illusion, a good recovery option for getting back onto the stage and is faster than Fire Fox, the first custom variant is Fox Blast, which has decreased distance and deals no damage during the dash, but it creates an explosion at the end of the move, the other variant is Wolf Flash, which is based on Wolf's side special in Brawl, it has less horizontal distance than Fox Illusion, and it does have a meteor effect when it hits. Then for Fire Fox, the first custom variant is Flying Fox, which is faster, the start-up is quicker, but it does not deal any damage, and the other variant is Twisting Fox, Fox spins to draw in opponents, and when he rises into the air, it hits multiple times, this move has better knockback, and it is like Wolf's up special in Brawl. Then for Reflector, and this move has a different name for its custom variants in the European version, first up is Big Reflector, otherwise known as Large Reflector, where the size of the reflective shield is bigger, but it doesn't power up reflected projectiles, and it pushes away opponents instead of dealing damage, and the other variant for that move is Amplifying Reflector, or Pulse Reflector, which takes longer to activate, and it reflects projectiles for double the damage, the Reflector does not deal damage or can push back opponents.
I do like how most of Fox's custom moves reference some of Wolf's moves in Brawl, and his 8th alternate costume does use the same colour scheme as Wolf. It is good seeing characters reference certain characters that were cut, like how Toon Link has some of Young Link's moves for his custom moves, with Fox, some of his moves are identical to Falco's moves as well as Wolf's moves.
