The KO #59 - World Heroes and WH Perfect are Gorgeous (PS2)
This is me playing most of the characters across all four of the World Heroes series of NeoGeo fighting games by ADK, courtesy of the World Heroes Gorgeous collection on PS2!
I think I didn't think much of these games back in the olden times, but now that I'm trying them again, the first World Heroes game actually does have a nutty charm to it. The next two games, World Heroes 2 and World Heroes 2 Jet, maybe traded some of that fundamental appeal in favor of jamming in a lot more characters (in 2), and higher game speed and crazy, maybe not entirely successful variations on the usual fighting game modes (in 2 Jet), all lumped in on top of what was originally a nice and simple game, but the final game, World Heroes Perfect, offers a completely revamped game, freshening the whole thing up in what really is a rather gorgeous presentation.
(World Heroes 2 also has a much higher difficulty level than the first game, on the default setting; I guess I should go back and drop it to a lower setting and see if my opinion of it improves!)
Oh! And the Gorgeous PS2 collection lets you play the games with the fully orchestrated "Arrange" sound tracks made for the NeoGeo CD versions, rather than the original arcade chip tunes, if you want. So I did play these using the AST music.
Okay so time stamps: I played a bit with all the characters, more or less, in the first game, then the new characters in the next few games, then a selection of ones I was interested in in the final game:
1:47 - World Heroes Gorgeous title screen
2:29 - WORLD HEROES
3:39 - Hanzo - Death Match mode
9:22 - Fuuma (from here on they're in Normal mode)
13:02 - Dragon
18:29 - Janne
23:26 - J. Carn
28:01 - Muscle Power
35:03 - Brocken
37:36 - Rasputin
43:04 - WORLD HEROES 2
44:10 - C.Kidd (Death Match mode)
46:44 - Ryoko (Normal Game from here on; this Ryoko is, I hear, based on the same real-world Japanese female champion judoka as the Ryoko in Karnov's Revenge...but Revenge's Ryoko https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7KukMNAGLg&t=667s seems a lot better as a competitive fighting game character, at least at first blush)
49:29 - Mudman
51:21 - Erick
53:27 - Shura
55:30 - J.Max ("Johnny Maximum" is a super corny stereotyped American football fighting game character, but it would be hard for me to pick out a more entertaining big bruiser type...well okay *maybe* Tizoc, but still)
1:02:10 - WORLD HEROES 2 JET
1:03:55 - Jack ("Forging of Warriors" mode)
1:08:14 - Ryofu ("Entry to the Tournament" mode)
1:10:53 - J.Max (Forging of Warriors mode)
1:12:35 - WORLD HEROES PERFECT
1:13:23 - How to Play
1:14:27 - Son Gokuu
1:18:39 - Neo-Dio
1:23:34 - Ryoko
1:25:49 - J. Max
