The KO #64 - Street Fighter Alpha's secret Vs. CPU mode (Anthology)
The collected Street Fighter Alpha games in Street Fighter Alpha Anthology on PS2 have a hidden Vs CPU mode: highlight "VERSUS" on their main menu, press the X button to select it, then immediately press the Triangle and R2 buttons together; if you did it correctly, instead of being taken to the usual 2P Vs. character select screen, you'll go straight into a battle with a random character--could even be one of the secret characters (Dan, Dictator, or Akuma)--against a random CPU character; when this battle ends, you go into a new random Vs. CPU battle! And so on to infinity. From the Pause menu in this mode you can access a list from which you can remove characters from either the player or the CPU's random selection--for instance, midway through this session I removed Akuma from the list after he gave me a few too many severe beat-downs. ;_; : p
The author of the Anthology FAQ where I found how to do this https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps2/931620-street-fighter-alpha-anthology/faqs/43035 called it "Battle Mode"; I don't find that phrase elsewhere so I'm not sure where the term originated--it's a bit vague, and could be confused with the much better known 2 v 1 "Dramatic Battle" mode. This secret mode accessed off the "Versus" menu item is probably better described as a secret Vs. CPU mode.
Before this, I had played a lengthy regular Arcade mode session of SFA in Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, but a) I had my recording video settings set up incorrectly ;_;, and b) I finally realized why would I play regular old Arcade mode with its awkward difficulty curve (too easy, maybe one or two competitive fights, then suddenly way too hard : p) when I could be playing the fun and exciting hidden Vs. CPU mode in Anthology instead?? So I did. : D
One sort of draw-back with this mode is that it doesn't have character move lists in it, so I guess it was useful that I played most of the characters in 30th Collection first, where I could see those move lists; on the other hand, I generally do better when I just play instead of trying to force tricky moves out. : P
