Horizon Forbidden West is an absolutely gorgeous game that makes use of the rendering power of the PS5 to create something crisp, beautiful, and incredibly impressive.

Unfortunately, increasingly photorealistic graphics also come with additional baggage, as can be seen in the reception that the upcoming game has received this week, with many people complaining that the Horizon protagonist, Aloy, looks different.

This complaint aside, there's a larger challenge with providing increasingly photorealistic graphics within established game worlds: it can be difficult for players with an existing emotional connection to a game to accept a newer alternative to the version that they've already grown attached to. In some ways, the more realistic a game's art appears, the harder it is for players to accept it.
