The ongoing lawsuit between Epic Games and Apple over Fortnite revenue has revealed the full extent to which Sony hates crossplay, or cross-platform play, between its PlayStation consoles and other platforms.

Apparently, Sony's big concern is that people will play a free-to-play game like Fortnite on PlayStation but then make in-game purchases on another platform, such as Apple. Epic Games has been arguing over Apple's cut of these purchases - hence the lawsuits - but it turns out that in instances such as these, Epic has actually had to pay twice. One chunk of revenue goes to Apple, while Epic also has to pay Sony to compensate perceived loss of earnings.

It's hard not to admire Sony's stubbornness in only allowing crossplay because Epic pays for it, but this kind of thing is inherently anti-consumer. When these big companies squabble over in-game purchase revenue, players inevitably lose out.
