I’ve been on a Doom kick again so I’ve been attempting pistol start runs of all of the maps. As of this writing I’ve got all of Knee Deep in the Dead and three maps of The Shores of Hell done. I haven’t been TASing these runs because I’d like to do them completely fairly, so no rewinding or save states other than restarting the demo if I die.
Anyway, E1M1. Not much to say about this map that hasn’t been said before, and you’re going to be pistol starting it anyways since it’s the first map of the episode. I do like how much depth there is to this map despite how small and straightforward it is. John Romero himself said he made this map last (a common game design trick), and you can tell playing it by how effortlessly the map steers you around it.
