Sonic 1 is 30 years old as of 2021 and it still largely holds up. Although it's missing a few series staples like Tails, Super Sonic, and the Spin Dash, it still feels like a Sonic game should...
...mostly! Everyone by now knows how lame Marble and Labyrinth Zone both are. Thankfully, the worst zones are spread out far enough from each other that it never grinds completely to a halt, and on top of this, Labyrinth Act 1 and Scrap Brain Act 3 both have pretty massive shortcuts to speed things along a bit.
There are several different versions of Sonic 1. This is the Japanese version which adds some more scrolling effects to the Green Hill background, rippling water in Labyrinth Zone, and properly colors the Chaos Emeralds. The rare Mega Play version, included on the Nintendo Switch Sega Ages version, completely ditches Marble, Labyrinth, and Scrap Brain Act 3 along with the Special Stages, and drastically shortens the time limits for a faster paced experience. The Game Gear/Master System version is essentially a brand new game and worth checking out for its totally different zones and little quirks. The best above all though is the Taxman/Stealth mobile remake, done in the same Retro Engine that would later power Sonic Mania. It features Tails and Knuckles as well as various secret bonuses like Super Sonic and the Sonic 3 Elemental Shields. This version has been reverse engineered and ported to PC; as long as you have the Android version's data you can play it.
