Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell w/ EAX & 3D spatial sound 🎧 (OpenAL Soft HRTF audio) 1 Year Anniversary!
Turn your volume way up and use headphones only with any virtual surround like Windows Sonic turned off. Best HRTF effects at 0:00, 1:10, 4:43, 5:40, 7:47, and 8:46.
Today marks the one-year anniversary since I started this series about binaural audio in video games. It all began with a video demonstrating the X-Fi Titanium's underappreciated CMSS-3D HRTF feature in Half-Life 2*. Back then, I only got about a handful of views per video. I've come a long way since then with hundreds more videos, 134 loyal subscribers, and a DirectSound3D wrapper that makes CMSS-3D completely obsolete. After a Horror game marathon in October that didn't pan out the way I wanted, I took a lengthy break from regular uploads. Now, it's time for me to return to the mantle of being the ONLY Youtube channel that records binaural videos for non-sexual purposes.
(You know who you are, you sick perverts)
This is Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell with OpenAL Soft's HRTF through DSOAL. This is a series that's been requested for almost as long as I have been making videos. I'm going to be honest: I'm not a Splinter Cell fan at all. Playing this was torture for me, with constant quicksaving and an entire failed first take where I forgot to change the reverb settings before recording. Stealth games just aren't for me, but I love my dedicated fans too much to deprive them of a game they've been waiting so long for. My only regret is that the demo doesn't have the section with the burning building, which would've sounded amazing with HRTF.
In terms of 3D positional audio, Splinter Cell goes above and beyond what is possible with mere stereo. You get a full 360 degree audio environment with stunning realism. As the timestamps demonstrate, you will hear sounds above, below, in front of, and behind you with perfect accuracy. Playing Splinter Cell with the DSOAL wrapper is as if Aureal was never bought out and continued making soundcards well into the 2000s. There are some flaws in the audio engine, like door sounds playing far and too the right or voice acting not being spatialized, but they're easily overlooked.
