By transforming from robot to vehicle mode and vice versa. And they usually do this before allowing a human to ride inside them. The most common ways for the transformer interaction with the human companion with one involves the human ejecting during the transformers’s transformation. Which we see when Bee ejects Sam before executing a mid-air transformation in Dark of the Moon. Or when he ejects Cade, Tessa, and Shane before Optimus catches them and transforms back into his alt mode. But there was 1 exception where we see humans still inside transformer when they transform. in the Bumblebee film where we saw Bee being chased by a police officer. To avoid revealing the identities of Charlie and Mamo he lowers their seats. He then slightly transforms into robot mode by not fully converting his chest piece to avoid crushing his human passengers. So it can be done but at the expense of comfort.
