Zelda: A Link to the Past [SNES] Playthrough #12, Southern Dark World
This is video #12 in my playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the SNES. Link has just cleared the Palace of Darkness, the first dungeon in the Dark World. Now, it is time to explore the southern section of the Dark World. In the area southeast of the Palace of Darkness, there is a cave with a creature that will tell Link a story for some Rupees (time 1:28). Actually, this advice is a little late; we already have the Quake Medallion.
By the way, the staked-off area outside is the location of a warp tile in the Light World.
West of the palace grounds Link uses his handy new hammer to pound some stakes blocking the land bridge (time 3:05). Where the Lake Hylia fortune teller was in the Light World, there is now a shop that sells some supplies (time 3:41). In the area where Link's house was, there is a Bomb Shop that will become important later.
Southwest of the Bomb Shop, there is an area partially enclosed by mountain ridges with bushes in a curious diamond shape (time 5:28). If Link returns to the Light World here, he can access a previously unreachable cave containing Heart Piece #15.
Back in the Dark World, Link visits the grove where the ghostly boy was playing the flute in the Light World (time 6:27). Looks like we've found where the boy actually wound up. If Link says yes, the boy will lend him the Shovel.
Armed with the Shovel, Link should now dig in the northwest part of the corresponding grove in the Light World (time 7:12). This will dig up the Flute! Actually, it looks like an ocarina, but who's quibbling?
Back in the Dark World, Link presents the flute to its owner (time 7:41). It is a little sad what happens when Link fulfills the boy's final request.
Leaving the grove, Link heads west to the area corresponding with southern Kakariko Village. There is a shooting gallery, but there is no real point to it.
The real attraction is the Treasure Field to the west (time 9:16). For 80 Rupees, Link gets to dig up the field for 30 seconds and keep any treasures he finds. The main prize for this mini game is a Heart Piece. To reset the mini game, he just has to exit east and then return. More often than not, the Rupee prizes from the ground will help him keep going.
After a bit of digging, Link finds Heart Piece #16 (time 10:57). Another Heart Container completed!
Afterwards, Link returns to Kakariko Village in the Light World. Outside the smithy's workshop, he pounds down the stake with his Hammer and hops down the hole bordered by a light green barrier (time 12:09). In the room to the north, there is a strange altar. When Link spritzes some Magic Powder on it, a strange bat-like creature appears. In "revenge," it casts a spell that halves Link's magic usage, essentially doubling his magic pool.
Then, he heads to the bar in Kakariko Village (time 13:29). The old man sleeping on the rug is actually the Flute Boy's dad, so Link plays the Flute for him.
As the old man requests, Link plays the Flute at the weathervane (time 14:14). After a lovely melody, the bird atop the weathervane transforms into a real duck! This helpful bird can deposit Link at any of eight locations around the overworld.
South and west of his house, Link finds a warp tile (time 15:01). In the southwest of the Dark World, Link finds that the entrance to the Swamp of Evil, which corresponds to the Desert of Mystery, is impassable. The fence posts to the southwest are more of a clue than an obstruction. Here, he can use the Mirror to arrive on a previously unreachable plateau near the Light World desert (time 15:50). To the west, there is a monument that provides the Bombos Medallion.
In the Dark World, Link finds the entrance to the second dungeon where the Watergate is in the Light World.
Thanks for watching!
