This is what I think of when I think of music from the Sonic franchise: fast, fun, and free. From a purely compositional standpoint, this might be my favorite song on the album, everything about it is just gorgeous. The chorus uses a I - II - IV - I chord progression. This sequence is likely most well known from Eight Days a Week by The Beatles. The major 2 chord is not diatonic to the major key, and is a defining chord of the Lydian scale, which often has a floaty, spacey quality. As a result this brings out a very light, pop-punk sound in this track. This is one of those songs that seems unassuming at first, but the more you listen to it the more you realize how perfect everything about it is. I love Rooftop Run so much.
