REVIEW:
-'EASY', hey the rules of the challenge stipulate beating every game on the starting settings & it just so happens that's 'easy' here.
Game 69 was reserved for a certain inflatable pink blob, alas cartridge battery save drama has put that on hold so in its place steps a hack n slash brawler from tiny Frech dev team Arcade Zone, for who's 3 working titles, only 2 actually saw release & only this one outside of Japan!
Often sighted as a bit of hidden gem, it's easy to see the attraction given its attractive looking design and large colourful sprites. The level of detail pays more than just homage to the genres arcade routes, proving good enough to easily assume it's a genuine port of a Beat em up cabinet. However this is an original game, as well as an exclusive. The quality attached to the arcade aesthetic is a real testament to the quality of the dev team, living up to the companies 'Arcade Zone' name.
Beyond looks however there's little else that's groundbreaking. Gameplay is on the slow side & your attack variety is yawnfully limited. A 3 stage hack, slash & kick combo is achieved by holding attack & a forward jump kick or static jump slash completed with attack & jump, prove your only basic options! You are equipped with a magic arrow move but at a penalty cost of 10% health for every use. Thankfully room clearing magic is utilised by sacrificing 2 magic pots collected throughout stages. They're best saved for bosses however you can only store 9, resulting in a maximum of 4 uses.
Keeping with bosses, they really are the only danger facing you. The spike in difficulty between all stage enemies and the bosses is ridiculous. A careful jump kick tactic can render all threat utterly harmless, but bosses are a very different matter hence a reliance on magic. Still even boss difficult varies dramatically. I question whether Stage 1's bosses may actually be the hardest in the whole game?
Normal mode presents little more in stage difficulty but given the bosses increase in health, it does becomes a more painful encounter. I'm sure id beat it with some more practice but I'm also very happy to stick to the rules of the challenge and move on.
